Jose Macabra brings over a decade of experience at the intersection of sound design, radical pedagogy, and experimental music production. As an educator, artist, and sonic provocateur, he helps students explore new ways of making music, merging digital tools like Ableton Live with analogue synths, DIY electronics, field recordings, and unconventional performance setups.
From his early workshops at 01 Studios to experimental sessions in UK secondary schools and prisons, Jose has developed a unique teaching style rooted in improvisation, critical listening, and sonic experimentation. He has led independent workshops for people with brain injuries, taught electronic music production and sound design at SAE Institute London, and since 2018/19 has been a lecturer at UAL’s London College of Communication, teaching across both the BA (Hons) Music Production and BA (Hons) Sound Arts programmes.
On the Music Production course, he leads modules such as Aesthetics of Music Production, Creative Audio Programming, and Innovations in Music Production—focusing on experimental sound design, composition, and contemporary production techniques. On the Sound Arts course, he teaches the exploratory module Sonic Doing and Thinking, supporting students in developing personal and critical approaches to sound as art.
Jose offers private tuition, mentorship, and art consultancy for artists and learners of all levels who want to explore experimental music-making in depth. His teaching is hands-on and responsive, designed to help you develop your own sonic language whether through the DAW, modular synths, voice, or noise.
He is also available for sound direction and production in multimedia projects, performance works, and art house cinema.
